'Cells to Music’ by lizz Tuckerman and Nick Jenkins.

This piece is based on a batch of experimental recordings of stem cell growth provided by Nick Jenkins from the Centre for Stem Cell Biology, Sheffield University. Stem cells are undifferentiated cells that have the potential to develop into any cell in the body. In the future stem cells may be used to replace defective or worn out cells and to provide cures for a variety of diseases. I have edited and manipulated a selection of the stem cell clips along the theme of the BeeGee’s ‘Staying Alive’. In addition to the dancing connotations ‘Staying Alive’ also refers to the pharmaceutical potential of stem cells to alleviate degenerative diseases, the objective of the scientist when culturing cells, and the debate over the experimental use of embryonic tissue.
